Who We Are
History
MetroCare was conceived in 1983 during a backyard volleyball game among a number of physicians. Dr. Richard B. Raines began a discussion that inspired the formation of a physician-led organization to serve physicians' interests in managed care contracting.
With Dr Raines’ guidance and unwavering vision, the group of five persevered and quickly grew into an organization of 80 physicians throughout Shelby County. After 25 years, MetroCare is now one of the region’s largest Independent Physician Associations (IPAs) and now provides the physician panel representation for more than 100 different employers, insurance companies and health plans.
In 1984 MetroCare leaders and Methodist Healthcare collaborated to form a physician hospital organization (PHO) Health Choice.
